Riders with a Message June 29

Third Annual Journey Along the Erie Canal Kick-Off Celebration on Monday, June 29, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. (please arrive by 11:15 am). Activities will last about ½ hour to 45 minutes. Canal Street Gazebo & Park (Near 57 Canal Street and 79 Canal Street – Lake Effect Ice Cream, off Ontario between Church & Gooding), Lockport, NY 14094. Handicapped accessible bathrooms will be available. Sponsored by Our Ability and the New York State Canal Corporation and hosted by Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, the Niagara County Chapter of NYSARC, and Lockport Main Street.

Speakers providing brief comments will be: Honorable Anne McCaffrey, Mayor City of Lockport; Brian U. Stratton, Director, New York State Canal Corporation; Kellie Spychalski, Executive Director, Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, and John Robinson, President/CEO, Our Ability, Inc.

Robinson and Doug Hamlin from Our Ability will once again board their adaptive bicycles for an ambitious twelve-day ride across upstate New York on the Erie Canalway Trail. The 350-mile journey will begin in Tonawanda and end in Albany with a focus on celebrating the 25thAnniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act while raising awareness of the work still to be done in so many areas to support access to employment and physical inclusion. Members of the public are also invited to walk or ride the Trailway with Robinson and Hamlin, for as long as they would like, as the cyclists head to Medina.
