The Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Employees Union Local 4265 is the exclusive bargaining agent for the employees of Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara. The president of the union is Edith Janese, vice-president is Diane Cevaer, treasurer is Bernadette Menz and secretary is Mary Jo Iorfida. Formed in 1980, then representing about 80 employees of the Niagara Chapter of NYSARC, they have grown to approximately 280 members.
The union is affiliated with New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). NYSUT provides the local with a Labor Relations Specialist who assists the union with grievances, arbitrations and contract negotiations. This individual is well-versed in labor and employment law and is available to advise and assist the executive board in any way needed.
The local supports many agency/program participant events with volunteering and sponsorships. It also participates in community events such as the United Way campaign and Workers’ Memorial. The local is represented on the Niagara Orleans Labor Council (NOLC). The local also participates in the WNY Labor Federation, civic events and continued education and conferences through NYSUT and NOLC.
The local has formed a strong and positive relationship with the agency including the forming of the Labor/Management committee. Through the main steering committee an outgrowth LMC sub-committee was developed to further communication and come to resolutions on any issues that may arise throughout the agency. They also have a Labor/Management employee picnic, which honors and recognizes employees with 20 or more years of service.
